April 23, 2018
Nexsen Pruet’s Edward (Ed) G. Menzie, a Member in the firm’s Columbia office, has been honored with the University of South Carolina School of Law’s Compleat Lawyer Award. Ed was recognized during the 26th Annual Compleat Lawyers Awards Ceremony with a Platinum Award, based on his 47 years in practice.
Ed’s extensive real estate experience includes the development of over 2.5 million square feet of commercial office space and medical office buildings, as well as public and public-private facilities. Some of his notable projects include the South Carolina State Museum, the University of South Carolina Research Campus and the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, as well as helping to create the Jocassee Gorges State Park, which National Geographic listed as one of “50 of the World’s Last Great Places.” If you live in South Carolina, you’ve likely been to a meeting, convention or golf course that was one of his projects.
"After working with Ed for 38 years, I can say without reservation that he is - hands down - the best business lawyer I've ever dealt with," said John Sowards, Chairman of Nexsen Pruet from 2010 - 2016. "Ed's positive impact on our firm and on the dozens of lawyers he has positively impacted is too great to really appreciate. Without Ed, there would literally not be a Nexsen Pruet Business Law Department. He started it all."
Ed, a 1971 magna cum laude graduate of the School of Law, has vast corporate, finance, real estate and securities experience representing his clients in high profile real estate and real estate financing transactions of almost every type, from 750,000 square feet high-rise office towers to 20,000 acre waterfront land acquisitions. He has also served as disclosure counsel for a number of project financing transactions, and lead counsel in various large M&A and securities transactions, including IPOs.
Ed has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America® as “Lawyer of the Year” four times and is one of only 15 South Carolina attorneys to have been recognized by the organization every year since the list was first published in 1983. Ed has also been recognized as a “Leading Individual” by Chambers USA and a “Legal Elite of the Midlands” by Columbia Business Magazine. He is a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.
